Habitat for Humanity...for my soul!

I have always wanted to do more to help those in need, yet always found excuses and put it off until "some day". It came down to fear of doing something new and difficult...laziness too. Well, "some day" finally came by the grace of God.

This past November, I found myself at a Habitat For Humanity meeting at my church, volunteering for the first couple Saturdays of a build they were sponsoring. Those first few Saturdays led to more Saturdays and eventually to working on the midweek crew as well. We just completed the house in March and will dedicate it on April 24th.

The first build was such a rewarding experience that I immediately joined the next scheduled build. I've spent the last two days working on this second build. We just hit the milestone of getting the plywood up on the roof and exterior walls.
You put in a hard day's work, but you go home feeling a sense of real accomplishment. I've met a lot of great people and learned a set of construction skills that'll come in handy when I own my own home. I've used power saws, drills, a chainsaw, and got to do some plumbing and electrical work, too.

I strongly recommend for everyone to consider volunteering for Habitat. Do not let fear of the unknown get in the way. There are many different jobs needed to be done. They will show you how to do everything.
