I remember getting up extra early to make sure I didn't miss it and then thinking as I got ready that it'll probably just be a small gathering of the truly devoted or morning people.
As I drove towards the beach park, I saw the flashing lights of the cops and sheriffs out directing traffic to get everyone safely across A1A. This is bigger and more involved than I realized. The Walmart parking lot, where everyone was parking, was full. Much bigger. I grabbed my chair and joined the great throng of humanity slowly processing through the pitch dark, across the road, and towards the beach entrance.
When I reached the top of the boardwalk and looked down the beach at the thousand plus, I felt awe. Every once in a while you get a glimpse of how truly big it all is and in that instant you feel yourself drawn up into something that transcends this life. I felt such a sense of belonging... such a connection to this band of believers searching for something more than themselves. You can't help but be moved at the thought...that this is what it was like for those for came to hear Jesus speak 2,000 years ago.
Mark 6:34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
