25 years ago today, The Goonies hit theaters nationwide. It's one of my all-time favorites and is as great now as it was back when I first saw it.
"Truffle Shuffle", "Pinchers of Peril", "Goonies never say die", "Sloth love Chunk" If you're a fan these words and phrases elicit strong memories.
The Goonies was directed by Richard Donner, written by Chris Columbus, and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film takes place in and was filmed in Astoria, Oregon.
After finding a map in the attic, a group of neighborhood friends set off in search of hidden pirate treasure as a last great adventure together and in the hopes that by finding the treasure they can save their neighborhood from demolition. They are forced to solve riddles and navigate deadly booby traps all the while being pursued by escaped convicts, the Fratellis.
The five minute opening scene still stands out to me as one of the best. Brilliantly edited and scored, it launches us right into the action of the story and also introduce us to the characters in a creative and exciting way.
Two other factors probably have a lot to do with this movie being held in epic status in my eyes. First, like the main character I too am named Mikey and suffered from Asthma. Secondly, The Goonies was released in the heart of two of the greatest years for movies ever (1984-1985). These were the last two summers my brothers and I spent with our cousins before my family moved from Virginia to Florida. Here are the other movies:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - May 23, 1984
Gremlins - June 8, 1984
Ghostbusters - June 8, 1984
Karate Kid - June 22, 1984
Goonies - June 7, 1985
Back to the Future - July 3, 1985
Pretty awesome, I know.
