Do This In Memory of Me

When I pulled into the parking lot of my church for the 8:45 Mass, the place was already packed. It turned out that today, 112 children in our parish were celebrating their First Holy Communion, and countless family and friends had gathered to witness it. It is one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Roman Catholic's life. It is the reception of the Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharist), that is the body and blood of Jesus Christ, for the very first time.

This always brings the memories back.

I remember when I was four or five, wondering what my parents were doing when they processed up to the altar. When my mom tried to explain about the bread, in my head, I pictured the priest standing up there with a bag of Wonder bread, handing out the slices.

I remember preparing in the CCD classes and being taught the real presence of Jesus in this sacrament. I remember my mom making me do practice runs, walking solemnly and respectfully and receiving a practice wafer on my tongue. I remember being in a suit and tie and the girls in white dresses and veils. I remember the party we held after and how important and special I felt as my parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins congratulated me on this momentous day. Never before or since have I experienced such a total sense of belonging.

Looking back (and looking forward for that matter), I'm in awe of it all. I forgot how big and beautiful it is. Thank you God for Your Church on Earth.
